Category Content

Use Category Content to highlight information about your product categories. For SEO or for general information, add and change the page title, headline, meta information, and content.

You must be a SuperAdmin or an Admin with the Content Area role to access this feature.

Select Category Content from Admin > Content > Category Content

Select the category you want to edit

This list contains all categories currently visible on your website.  Click the category you'd like to edit to get started.

To add content to the top-level category page, you can select "Root Category" from the top of the list.

Meta Info

  1. Google SERP Preview tool shows you an approximation of a Google search result entry for the selected category. This is a basic approximation that provides you with an idea of how much of your title and meta description will be shown in search results.
  2. Set your Page Title, Page Headline, and Page Meta Description for the selected category. The character counts will give you an idea of best SEO practices for the given entry.  See our article on Meta Information for a closer look at meta information.  If the category header you're adding content to shows sub categories (rather than items), you can use "Hide Category Images" if you only want the names of the sub categories to appear (rather than the images and names).
  3. The Page Keywords tool can help you keep track of keywords in the meta information and content of your category header, so that people can find your content when they're browsing the web.  For a more detailed explanation of how this tool works, see the article called Using the Page Keyword Feature.

Edit Content

  1. The default Category Content editor is the Content Builder with drag and drop snippets, but you can switch between the various editing modes.  The other option is Code Editor where you can edit the HTML code of your content.
  2. This is where the header content goes.  The toolbar has a variety of text formatting tools you can use to modify your text.
  3. Drag and drop a variety of content snippets to easily add content to your Category Content.  You'll find tons of valuable information on working with snippets in our 'Creating and Managing WebAlliance Content Pages' manual that will apply here as well.  Keep in mind that including a lot of multimedia content (videos, images, iFrames) here will slow down page loading times.

Refrain from including external scripts on Category content. For more information, see this article from our Content Creation manual.

If you've found that users naturally gravitate towards certain filters when searching for items within a category, you can feature up to 4 of those filters in its own section of the category page. This will also display the filter values in the list of items that are displayed for the category. This doesn't mean any other filters you have assigned to the category won't be available, it just lets you shine a spotlight on certain filters that you believe are more useful for your users.

  1. Enter the heading of the featured filters section of the page.
  2. Enter a description for the featured filters section.  This will appear below the heading.
  3. The featured filters are arranged on the page from left to right.  You can sort them in the order you want them to appear by dragging them into place, or using the arrows to the left of the filter name to move them up and down the list.
  4. To select a filter to feature, click the "+" next to the name of the one you want to add from the list of available filters.  You can have up to 4 featured filters.

NOTE: This feature is only applicable to sites that use the Attribute Manager system

Above is an example of a Category page in "Rows" view with Featured Filters.  In this case, the items are filtered to show items with a Fractional Size of 1/64.  A user can select any combination of the featured filters to find the specific items they need.  Selecting any additional filters from the left navigation will also work in combination with these.

Note:  Selecting the filters here just tells the site what filters you want to feature, and will show the filter values on the items on the category page.  To show the section of the page where users can select these filters (marked "1" in the screenshot above), you will need to make sure to add the Filters section through Page Display Items and Order.

Category Variations

If you want to use Category Variation groups instead of Filters and an Item List, you will still need to select what attributes to display in the "Featured Search Result Filters" section.

Category Variations are currently an experimental feature. There may be changes to the current functionality while we continue to make improvements to this section of WebAlliance.

Item Category Variations are a way to display all available attributes on one screen. By clicking each attribute, a customer can narrow down exactly what product they are looking for. In the above example there is one item that matches every attribute so it is the only one displayed. If multiple items share every attribute selected they will all be listed at the bottom of the page and can be individually selected to view their image, price, and availability.

Item Display Options

You can determine how your items will be listed on the category page.

  1. You can select either "SKUs", which is the way you would normally see your items listed and is the default type, or "Rows" which sacrifices some of the item information for a more streamlined look.
  2. Clicking the "Here" button will show you a preview of your items based on the selected Item Display Type (Rows or SKUs), so you don't have to save any changes to the page see what it will look like.
  3. When in "Rows" view, you can choose to display or hide columns representing any of the selectable options.

The above is an example of how items will look when "Rows" is selected and Featured Search Result Filters are displayed.  Clicking on the column names which represent the "Featured Filters" for the category will group items according to the values in the column you clicked.

Default Sort

By default, WebAlliance uses a "Best Match" sorting system to make sure each user sees the items they would be most interested in at the top of the list of items.  However, you can use the Category Content tool to tell the system to sort the items in a category by a particular attribute instead.

  1. Enable or disable Default Sort for the category.
  2. Select the attribute you want to sort the items in the category by.  The list will be populated by the attributes assigned to the category you are viewing.
  3. Select whether you want to the items to be sorted in ascending or descending order.

If a user sorts the items in a category, the Default Sort will no longer be used.  For instance, if a user clicks the column heading of a category in row view, the items will be sorted by that column instead of the Default Sort order.

Category Variations Configuration

If you are using a Category Variation Group for a category of items you can choose to split the items apart by a certain attribute. As a general guideline, this works best with Attributes that have only a handful of options and are easily distinguished.  In the above example, a category of Threadmills has been split by their "Thread Type" attribute. This works well since there are only four different "Thread Types", and the user likely knows which one they would need. We end up with four splits which makes it easy for a user to identify which Thread Type they want immediately then narrow it down from there.

Page Display Items and Order

You can determine which sections you want to see on the category page, and the order you want to see it in.

  1. You can drag the sections to arrange them, or use the arrows to move them up and down in the list.  Click the "x" icon to remove a section from the category page.
  2. Under Available Sections, click the "+" next to the item that you want to add to the category page.

If you select "Filters" but not items, your users will have a confusing experience because the items won't be displayed on the page. If you choose to show "Filters (Featured Search Filters)", be sure to show "Item List (For Category)" as well.
