Custom Item Descriptions

You can use the Custom Item Descriptions tool to create description information to be shown on item listings throughout the website.

You must be a SuperAdmin or an Admin with the Content Area role to access this feature.

Why Custom Item Descriptions?

Custom Descriptions gives you a great way to display important information on your item listings. To configure them, you'll set a "trigger" so that any time the website loads an item with that trigger, the Custom Description can be displayed as part of the item listing.

Let's say your website lists several items that are considered Hazardous Material. If you'd like to display the same "Hazmat Warning"-type message on all of those items, a Custom Description is an excellent way to make that happen.

Creating a new Custom Description

First, visit "Custom Item Descriptions" from your website's Admin page. You can find it under the "Content" menu.

Then click "New Definition".

The first time you set up a Custom Definition, you'll need to configure your Custom Description Trigger Field. You can find the setting to do that in your website's Settings menu (in the "Products" section) or from the pop-up that's shown the first time an Admin user visits the Custom Item Descriptions Admin page.

Set the following:

  • Trigger Type - Full Match or "Starts With"
  • Trigger Text - the value of the trigger that will cause the Custom Description to be used
  • Sort Order - the priority of the Custom Description
    • NOTE - if an item matches more than one Custom Item Description trigger, all matches will be displayed. Use Sort Order to determine the order in which they'll show up.
  • Display Text - the actual Custom Description

Tip - you can use HTML in the "Display Text" field so that you can include icons, for example.

An Example

Our website lists 900 items that are considered Hazardous Materials. We'd like to use Custom Item Descriptions to display a hazmat warning message on those items.

First, configure the Custom Item Description

In this example, we'll use the PIM field called "tags" to trigger Custom Item Descriptions. After that's configured, we'll set up a Custom Item Description definition like this:

Next, tag the items in your ERP or the WebAlliance PIM

We'll use the "Tags" field in the WebAlliance PIM to tag our items. On the 900 items considered Hazardous Material, we'll mark "hazmat" (since that's the trigger used in our online Custom Item Description definition).

View the items online

Once the tag information has been updated to the website, the Custom Item Description definition will start working automatically.

If the Custom Item Description does not show up on the item listing itself, please contact Aldrich Web Solutions to help configure the new display.
