Tiered Shipping

If you'd prefer to set your own online shipping rates for a given shipping method, without regard to your item weight, use the WebAlliance Tiered Shipping option.

To access the Tiered Shipping settings, you will need to navigate to Site Manager > Shipping > Tiered Shipping while logged in as an admin. Once there, you will see a list of your current Tiered Shipping records.

Creating a New Record

You can add a new Tiered Shipping record by selecting the "Add New Record" button at the top left of the panel. Once in the configuration panel, you will be prompted to fill out the required information necessary to establish the Tiered Shipping record (see below).

  1.  Ship Type - The Shipping Method you'd like to apply the Tiered Shipping options to.
  2.  Start - What cart total you would like the Tier to start at.
  3.  End - The cart total you would like the Tier to end at.
  4.  Value- The amount charged for the designated Tier.
    • If you select a method of Fixed Price, this value will be a dollar amount.
    • If you select a method of Multiple, this value will be the multiple of the cart total you want to charge for shipping.
  5.  Method - Multiple or Fixed Price.
  6.  Min - The minimum amount to charge for shipping.
  7.  Max - The maximum amount to charge for shipping.
  8.  Calculated By - Price or Weight.

There is a convenient link to your site's Shipping Methods below the Tiered Shipping panel.

How Does it Work?

Tiered Shipping is a per-shipping-method feature. Let's use UPS Ground as an example:

You can set shipping price tiers, based on cart subtotal, like this:

  • Orders of $0 to $100 ship for $10
  • Orders of $101 to $500 ship for $15
  • Orders of $501 and up ship for $20

Since those tiers are set on UPS Ground, UPS Next Day would not be affected at all. You could set totally different shipping price tiers for UPS Next Day (and for UPS 3rd Day Select, and for UPS Worldwide, etc.)

Why Would I Use Tiered Shipping?

UPS and FedEx weight-based ship pricing estimates are available via an API service. For those estimates to be effective, though, your item weights need to be accurate.

If your item weights don't reflect the item's selling unit, Tiered Shipping lets you bypass the API services, and still add a shipping charge to orders. This is important to properly calculate the total amount of each order.

Even if your item weights are accurate, you might want to have more fine-grain control over the shipping price for each shipping method on your website. Tiered Shipping is a great way to accomplish that.
