WebAlliance integrates with Google Analytics 4 via Google Tag Manager. Google has announced that Universal Analytics will be discontinued in July of 2023. This article explains what steps would need to be taken in order to start using Google Analytics 4 (GA4) with your WebAlliance site.

Creating a Google Analytics Account

If you do not currently have a Google Analytics Account to use with your WebAlliance site, you will need to create one before continuing.

To create a Google Analytics account, Click Here.

Creating a GA4 Property within Google Analytics

Now that you have a Google Analytics account, you will need to create a GA4 property within Google Analytics, to tie together the connection from your Google Tag Manager account.

While you are in your current Analytics account, you will need to navigate to the Admin at the bottom left, and select the "+ Create Property" button.

The following prompt will then ask some Business Information questions, which can be filled out however you see fit.

The next prompt will ask if you would like to connect this newly created GA4 property to an existing UA property. Select "No", unless you would like to connect the two properties.

If you would like to continue to get Universal Analytic data alongside the GA4 data, you will also need to create a Universal Analytics property (if you don't already have one).

Creating a Google Tag Manager Account

The WebAlliance integration with Google Analytics 4 (GA4) is done entirely through Google Tag Manager. If you do not currently have a Google Tag Manager account, you will need to set one up so that you can get a Tag Manager ID to be used by your site.

To create a Google Tag Manager account, Click Here.

Creating a GA4 Property within Google Tag Manager

Next, you will need to create a GA4 property within Google Tag Manager to capture events sent by WebAlliance.

While on the home page of your Google Tag Manager account, you will need to select the "Create Account" button at the top right.

On the "Add a New Account" window, you will need to provide an Account Name, a Container Name (we use the site address), and the Target Platform, which in this instance would be "Web".  When you are happy with your entries, select the "Create" button.

After accepting the Terms of Service Agreement, you will then be given the code for your GTM tags, but you will not need these at this time, so you can close the prompt.

Creating a Google Tag via Google Tag Manager

While inside your Google Tag Manager account, you will also need to create a GA4 Configuration Tag. To do so, click "Tags" in the left nav of the admin panel, followed by clicking the "New" button at the top right of the page.

The Type of Tag selected will need to be a "GA4 Configuration" tag.

You will need to then enter your Measurement ID which will be located in the Admin of your Analytics Account. This ID can be found by navigating to your Account Admin > Property > Data Streams. From here, you will then want to select the "Web" option.

Next, you will need to configure the Data Stream by entering your WebAlliance website URL, along with a Stream name.

You can now click the Measurement ID copy link, and paste it into your Google Tag Manager measurement ID field. We recommend keeping the "send a page view event" checked.

Adding a Trigger to your new Google Tag

Now that you have created the base tag for your event, you will need to add a trigger for your newly created tag.

Select "Initialization - All Pages, to ensure this tag fires first before other tags on those pages.

You can give your Tag a name at the top left, and be sure to "Save" your changes at the top right.

You will then need to Submit and Publish your changes within Google Tag Manager which can be found at the top right of the Dashboard.

Integrating Analytics with Your Site

To access your Google Account settings within WebAlliance, navigate to Site Manager > Settings > Credentials > Google while logged in as an admin.

In the site settings, you will need to enter your Google Tag Manager ID along with your preferred Google Tag Manager Version, followed by enabling the GA4 Events.

Congratulations! Your WebAlliance site is now fully integrated with Google Analytics 4.
