Dealing with Links in the Content Builder

The Content Builder contains an extremely powerful link-building tool that allows you to link an image or text to a website, or to a file that's hosted in your WebAlliance hosting space. The methods for dealing with links in images versus dealing with links in text are slightly different.

Image Snippets

First select a snippet that contains an image. Hover your mouse cursor over the image to display two image-related options:

  • You can add or edit a link from an image to a webpage (either within your domain or outside it) or to a file hosted in your WebAlliance File Manager. Click the orange "link" button. See below for details.
  • You can upload an image directly from your computer to your new content page. Click the blue "camera" button and select your file. After selecting the image, you can natively zoom in or out and crop the image before displaying it on the page.

Click the orange "link" button on the image.

  • The "SOURCE" line allows you to select the image to display. Click the link icon to be taken to the Asset Manager where you can drag and drop an image from your computer, upload an image to the page, or select an image from the WebAlliance File Manager. If you select "Change Dimension" at the top of the box, you can adjust the dimensions of the image.
  • The "Title" box allows you to set the Title for the image. A title provides information for an image if a user cannot view it (slow connection, error on the server, screen reader, etc.) as well as extra information for search engines.
  • "Link" is the field that allows you to set the link itself.
  • "Target" determines whether the link will open in the current window (the default), in a new window (with the box checked), or in a Popup box.

Enter the URL in the "Link" box to link directly to a page, or click the "link" button next to "Link" to be taken to the "Browse Links" page.

  • Here, you can set the image to link to a page within your domain by selecting from the "Pages" tab. This list is automatically populated with other content pages on your site.
  • You can also choose to set the link to download a document hosted on your WebAlliance site by selecting the "Files" tab. Drag and drop a file, upload a new file, or pick a file from your WebAlliance File Manager. Make sure you're only linking to files that you would want your users to see.

Text Snippets

In any snippet that contains text, click into the text area to display the text formatting bar, seen at the top of the image above. There are several options here, and in this case, we are going to deal with the "link" option (surrounded in orange). This is the tool that lets you set a link from your text.

First, highlight the text you want to set as a link.

  1. In the Link field, enter the destination of the link. Click the "link" button to the right to select a file or to choose from existing content pages on your website.
  2. The "Text" field sets the text that will be displayed.
  3. The text you enter in the "Title" field will display when the user hovers their mouse over the link and additionally provides extra information for search engines.
  4. Target determines whether the link will open in the current window (the default), in a new window, or in a pop-up window.

For best results, only use the "Popup Window" option for links to pages that use the "Empty Page" layout.
