Working with Item Attributes in the PIM Enterprise
In PIM Enterprise, Item Attributes work in a very similar way to Item Attributes in the WebAlliance Attribute Manager. There are some useful tips on best practices for attribute values in the How do I edit attribute values for items? article.
Add or Edit Category Attributes
Select a category and click the "Category Info" tab to add or edit its category attributes. View the How do I add or edit attributes in a category? article to see more details on how to work with category attributes.
Individual items can be edited without having to find them in their category, you can search for them in the root ("Category List" in the example screenshot below) and edit the attributes there.
Remove a Category Attribute
Select a category and click the "Category Info" tab to remove an attribute for that category. Right-click an attribute and select "Delete" to remove it from the category. This will also remove all of the attribute values corresponding to the removed attributes from the items in the category.
Add or Edit Attribute Values for Items
- Select the category that contains the items you want to edit the attribute values of.
- From the "Items" tab, select the item(s) you intend to edit.
- Click the "Attributes" tab to see the available attributes for the category (attribute values appear when only a single item is selected). From here, add or adjust the attribute values.
- Finally, click "Save Changes". The attributes will be saved to the item(s) you have selected.
Attribute values can also be added using the Copy/Paste feature in the PIM: https://wamanuals.aes2.com/m/93393/l/1866703-copy-paste-attributes
Images for Attribute Values
There are 2 areas in the PIM where images can be added to attributes. The first is the Attributes tab of an individual item and the second is in the Category Info tab of a category. In both cases you'll want to right click the attribute you wish to add images to and select "Assign Images". The following screen will appear:

On the "Assign Attribute Images" popup, you will be given the option to add image to attribute values individually, or you can use the Auto Associate function to automatically attach image that have the same name as the attribute value. Note that the list of attribute values on this screen are already assigned to items in the category, therefore, you must have existing values before adding images.
Images added to attributes will appear for both Item Variations and Category Variations on the site.
Attribute Values Formatting
Make your attribute values alphanumeric, and avoid special characters. Characters like + & and * will not work correctly on your website. Fractional sizes automatically sort on your website. For example, the site will display:
1/4
1/2
3/4
1
1-1/4
1-1/2
Mixed numbers (like 1-1/4") must be formatted in the way shown above in order to maintain fractional sort capabilities. 1-1/2 is correct. 1 1/2 is incorrect.
Most of the time, attribute values that are numbers (1,2,3,4,5) will be sorted numerically while attribute values that are not numbers will be sorted alphabetically. However, there are some non-numeric labels for attribute values that are ignored, making the values sort numerically. See our "How will my attribute values sort?" article for the list of ignored labels. Fractional values behave differently, so if your attribute is a "Size" attribute that includes fractional sizes, be sure to include the unit in the attribute name and make the values only alphanumeric.
For Example:
Size (Inches)
1/2
3/4
1
1-1/2
- Also, you can get ranges and attribute values with multiple entries to sort numerically (provided the values are numbers) by formatting them in one of these 2 ways:
# - #
# x #
Attribute Lookup

As the heading name suggests, PIM allows you to also edit and delete attributes in mass. This tool is called "Attribute Lookup" under the "Search" menu. From there, you'll want to follow the steps below.
- Perform a search with either the exact or partial attribute name.
- Once you perform the search you'll see a list of categories on the left-hand side where that attribute and other attributes like it appear. By "other attributes" this means attributes that match your search partially. So if you search for "red" as an attribute and you have another attribute named "redundant", redundant would appear as a search result.
- To the right of the category list, you'll also see the "Item Attribute Name" field, altering this and saving the changes made will effectively rename the attribute within the selected category.
- In the right column, you will see various options for adjusting the attributes.
- Click "Save" to apply any and all changes made using this tool within the selected category.
- "Delete" will delete the attribute entirely from the selected category
Optimize Attributes Tool
The "Attribute Optimizer" tool allows you to consolidate attributes to a parent category if all subcategories share an attribute.
For example, you have a Category of "Hand tools" with the subcategories screwdrivers, wrenches, and hammers. Each subcategory has an individual attribute called "Color." Using the Attribute Optimizer tool will move the "Color" attribute to the "Hand tools" parent category to share between all subcategories instead of having it in each individual subcategory.
If in the above example screwdrivers and wrenches had the "Color" attribute but hammers did not, no change will be made since the hammers subcategory does not need a color attribute.
