Using the Ranked Items Feature
When assigning item data to your items, it is important to know which items you want to focus your attention on. The Ranked Items tool helps you find those items, using ideas from the "ABC Items" method.
What is the ABC Items Method?
"ABC Items" is a way of breaking down your list of items into more manageable groups that help to prioritize which items to focus on. The idea is to show your top-selling or popular items as the "A Items", then the next most popular item as the "B Items", then less common as the "C Items", and so on.
For more information about the methodology, see our Get a list of ABC Items article.
Configuring Ranked Items

The first thing you want to do is tell the PIM how you want to rank your items. You can access the configuration tool from the "Ranked Items" tab under "Settings" in the "File" menu.
- Break your items into groups. Click "Add Group" to select how many items you want to include in your "A Items" group. We generally suggest a number that represents 20% of your web-enabled items. As you add more groups, they will become your "B Items", "C Items", etc.
- Select the criteria you want an item to meet in order for it to be considered finished. For example, if you turn on the Category and Brand Name toggles, an item will need to be categorized and have a Brand Name filled out for it to be considered finished. You are welcome to enable as many of the toggles as you want, but a good rule of thumb would be to concentrate on Category, Web Description, Attributes and Images.
- Click the "Save Ranked Item Configuration" button to save your configuration.
Rank Items

Ranked Items will emulate the ABC Items methodology on your list of items in PIM. You can start this process by going to the "Tools" menu and clicking "Rank Items".

Once the items are ranked, you will be able to view the lists inside the "Ranked Items" tab in the Category Explorer. Here you will see your ABC rankings for the items.
- Clicking the "Finished Definition" button provides easy access to edit the definition of what a finished item is.
- The current definition of finished is listed at the top of the list.
- Within each rank is a section called "Unfinished" which represents the items in that list that are not yet considered finished. From the unfinished list, you can use the standard PIM mechanics to drag and drop the items into a category, add item information, and more.
For more information on how to categorize items, view the Working with Categories in the PIM Enterprise article.
Located under the "Ranked Items" tab Is the "Finished Definitions" button. This allows you to customize your ranked items quickly.
- Click on the "Finished Definitions" button
- The "Ranked Items Finished Definitions Form" window will populate. In this window select what items you want to use to rank by clicking on the toggles.
- Click "Save".
- The selected items will then populate along the top row of the grid.
Items selected in the "Ranked Items Finished Definition Form" will be highlighted in two places after saving. They will appear in the main window grid. Also, they will be bolded in the "General Info" section to the right.
