How do I create a category?

Category Menu

Creating a category is easy and simple to do.  The steps below will outline the details of it and give visual representations of the process.

Right-click a category to create a subcategory, move it up or down the list, edit the name, remove all items from it, or delete it.

Naming your Categories

Some notes on naming your categories:

  • Make the names alphanumeric (A-Z, a-z, 0-9, and spaces).
    • Each category should mean something in a standalone sense.  For example, instead of Gloves -> Rubber, try Gloves -> Rubber Gloves.

How many sub-categories should I create?

Generally, we recommend no more than 3 to 4 levels of sub-categories. That number provides a good browsing experience to your website's users. However, WebAlliance works with up to 10 levels of categories (the root level plus 9 sub-categories), so feel free to create that many sub-categories if you feel it best suits your website's catalog.

Order of Categories on the Website

Your categories will display on the web in the order that you sort them in Attribute Manager.  They display on the category page, as well as the left navigation panel of most internal site pages.

Troubleshooting the Order of Categories

Attribute Manager generally tells the website to display the categories in the same order as they appear in the Category List. However, in certain cases, the order of the categories might not be communicated to the web.

The fix is simple.

First, right-click on one of the categories that is out of place and choose "Move Up" or "Move Down", then do the opposite to put them back in the correct order. Then 'Export Data to File'.  There's nothing in the program that actually displays a confirmation, but after you do that, the website will be aware of the correct sort order.
